1. PRESIDENT’S
MESSAGE:
Our football team continues to
have its up’s & down’s! Here’s hoping we’re more up than down for the
rest of November. Speaking of November, due to my schedule this is likely
to be the only November edition of the SCSC News. Go NOLES!
FSU’s
Center for Civic Education has again announced the 12th annual
Service Scholar Program for the 2008-2009 academic year.
By participating in this program, students are prepared for and encouraged to
become leaders of and in service. Ten to 15 scholarships will be offered
to incoming freshmen who have demonstrated excellence in service and leadership
in planning and promoting service among their peers. If any of our
readers know of students who have an exceptional record of community service
and a desire to continue to learn though service and leadership (and who plan
to attend FSU), please have them contact Sheila – who will provide them with
additional information.

5. NEWS FROM FSU –
WHAT’S COOKING
- Two at
FSU Join Prestigious Ranks of AAAS Fellows. Two FSU faculty members
have been elevated to the rank of Fellow by the American Association for
the Advancement of Science. Gregory Boebinger,
the director of FSU’s National High Magnetic
Field Laboratory and professor of physics, and Sherry Southerland, an
associate professor in the university’s Department of Middle and Secondary
Education, both received the honor, which was formally announced in the
October 26 issue of the Journal of Science. (More information may be
available at www.fsu.com.)
- FSU
Presents Seminole Educator, Louise Jones Gopher, with rare Westcott Award.
FSU has bestowed the James D. Westcott Award on Louise Jones Gopher, a
champion of education for the Seminole Tribe of Florida and recognized by
the Palm Beach Post as one of 100 outstanding citizens who have made a
difference in people’s lives during the 20th century. The
award is a rare honor reserved for those whose loyalty, advocacy, and
support of the university is deemed extraordinary.
(More information may be available at www.fsu.com.)
- 2007
Ross Oglesby Award Goes to FSU Police Sgt. Mark Edenfield.
Garnet and Gold Key’s 2007 Ross Oglesby Award has been bestowed on Sgt.
Mark Edenfield, a member of the FSU Police
Department of 25 years and the “go-to-guy” for the coordinator of crucial
logistics such as police staffing at football games and other special
campus and student-sponsored events. (More information may be
available at www.fsu.com.)
- Proctor
Named Interim Athletics Director. FSU President T.K. Wetherell has announced the appointment of William L.
“Bill” Proctor of St. Augustine,
Fl., as special assistant to the president for athletics – a newly
created, temporary position. Having worked in higher education for
more than 4 decades, Dr. William L. “Bill” Proctor served for 30 of those
years as president of Flagler
College and now is
chancellor of the college – a position he will retain while assuming his
new temporary role. The new position was created to provide for
Proctor’s timely and smooth transition into the role of interim athletics
director upon the departure of Dave Hart, Jr., FSU’s
current athletics director. (More information may be available at www.fsu.com.)
