1.      PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

Wow!  Summer’s over and football is here.  I know we are all very excited.  This will be your only SCSC E-News for September as I’ll be in Florida for the month of September.  So, NOLES, let’s win!

2.      SAVE THESE DATES!

  • You’ll be receiving more information from V.P., Tennie Wiggins.  However, make a note in your calendars now.
  • September 7th and 8th:  Amerette Ridgeway, SCSC Events Chair, is working out the details.  We’ll be doing something to support the FSU Volleyball team when they plan in Long Beach that week-end.  Details are pending.
  • September 22nd:  Amerette Ridgeway is also working out all the details of our “meet & greet” event at the BackStage Café in Beverly Hills.  This neat place is owned by an FSU alum.  Our event will begin about 7 pm.  Plan to spend most of the evening with some fellow alums.

3.      SUPPORT FSU

To increase your support of Florida State University, please join these organizations:

·         Become a member of the FSU Alumni Association by going to www.alumni.fsu.edu.  Click on membership.  You can join online.  The annual cost is $35.00/individual or $45.00/joint membership.  Better yet, take out a life membership for $650/individual or $750/joint.  This can be paid via 10 payments.

·         Become a Seminole Booster by going to www.seminole-boosters.com.  Membership begins at $65.00 for an Iron Arrow and go to thousands, for those who have the dough.  You can  join online.

4.      UPCOMING SCSC BOARD ELECTIONS

Believe it or not, it will soon be time for our SCSC Board elections.  There are three people on our SCSC Board whose terms expire December 31, 2007.  At least two of those folks have indicated that they wish to seek re-election to the Board.  Several folks stated an interest in serving on the SCSC Board when they completed the SCSC Membership Form.

SCSC Secretary, Jeff Hyde, will be coordinating this year’s SCSC elections.  Jeff has been given a copy of the membership forms of folks who indicated an interest in serving on the Board.  He will be contacting those folks.  If you are interested in serving as an SCSC Board member, please contact Jeff ASAP at his e-mail address:  wjhydefsu@aol.com.  Ballots will go out by October 31st to all folks who have paid dues since August 1st, 2006.  So, if you want to vote and haven’t paid your dues since then, you’ll want to go to our website and click on Membership and print out the form.

5.      NEWS FROM SCSC MEMBERS AND FSU ALUMS

·         Abhishek Mandhana writes that he is a “soon to be FSU graduate”, as he is anticipating that he will earn his MS in Financial Mathematics in 2008.  He notes that this program is among the top 20 programs in the country for this field of work.  Prior to attending FSU, he did a double major in Mathematics and Economics at the University of Texas at Austin.  He is 22 years old and would LOVE to work in Southern California upon his graduation.  He can be reached at abhishek.mandhana@gmail.com and would love to get some ideas about his upcoming career in So Cal.

·         Bill Smith, former SCSC President writes that he has been extended an invitation to teach two graduate courses this fall in the Integrated Marketing Communications sequence at Florida State.  Of course, he has accepted.  Additionally, he will be teaching the capstone graduate class via web cam at West Virginia University’s Integrated Marketing Communications School.  In parallel, he has opened two businesses in Tallahassee.  Go to www.huckleberryfinntomorrow.com for more details.  One company is an integrated marketing Communications boutique and consultancy and the other is a mentoring service.  He and his lovely wife, Kathy, exchanged vows again in Tallahassee earlier in the year.  Kathy has taken a position with the Department of Health as a graphic designer.

·         Karen Szemborski (’86) writes that she’s been a Personal Trainer for the past 16 years.  After graduation, she went to Atlanta for 4 years; then Aspen, CO for 5 years; Chicago for 5 years; and moved out to LA 6 years ago.  She says that California is her last stop.  She worked at the Sports Club, LA when she first arrived and now she has her own business.  She mainly goes to people’s homes and is also at Personal Training Gym in West Hollywood/Beverly Hills.  She is always looking to inspire people to health and fitness and also wants to whip them into shape.  She can be reached via e-mail: k7trainer@aol.com

·         We want YOUR News Here!  Please send your news (personal, business, whatever) to Sheila Riley to be included in our next E-Newsletter.  Send to sheilaandruss@aol.com.  Please, send us some information so we’re not just reporting on the FSU alums out here in the Entertainment Industry.  We want to report on what our Entertainment Alums are doing.  We also want to report on what lots of alums are doing.  We want to report on lots of various Nole activities here in SoCal!

·         News from The Warren Report

o        From Jason Ciccarello (BFA ’03):  “I’m an assistant editor on “Survivor”.  This is my second season on the show and I love it.  I work with a great group of people at Mark Burnett Productions.

o        Universal Studios’ Hollywood-based feature film production company is currently seeking smart, energetic, and highly motivated interns for the fall.  Responsibilities are varied.  This internship offers a fantastic way to gain knowledge of the various stages of film development and production.  Interested students must be detail-oriented, have excellent communication skills and will be working for college credit.  No pay.  Fax resumes to 818-733-2384.

o        Kate Boyle (MFA ’01) writes:  “I am an AD on a pilot for TNT, called “Raising the Bar”.  It’s being produced by Steven Bochco and it stars Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Jane Kaczmarek, and Gloria Reuben.”

o        Adrienne MacKillop (BFA ’02) writes:  “I’m actually Lead Editor on a new show for VH1, which will start airing in October called “America’s Most Smartest Model”.  Yes, you read that right.  I’ve been working with this company, 51 Minds, for a while, on shows like “Surreal Life,” Flavor of Love”, Charm School”, etc.  I also jump around to other companies, cutting on various reality shows.  It’s like editing boot camp sometimes, but I love it.:

o        From Eric McCormicjk (BFA ’96):  “Still working for a company called Aspect Ratio.  Most recently finished work on the Transformers campaign, for which I cut a few TV spots and the highest testing trailer.  Unfortunately, Michael Bay went with a different trailer.  Currently working on Beowulf and Disney’s Enchanted.  I also started a small company which produces music cues and sfx for commercial and trailer use.  The name is OnQ.  (pronounced On Q).”

o        Science Advisory Available:  Ashley Carter was a post-doc at FSU and has just moved to LA.  He has undergrad degrees in biology, chemistry, and math and a Ph.D. in biology. He is interested in working with any writers who are looking for scientific ideas or for someone to check their ideas to see if they are realistic.  His specialties are evolutionary biology and ecology, but he has a broad background in a wide range of scientific concepts.  He can be reached at Ashley_carter_phd@yahool.com or at 850-559-2082.
