PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE: We are now in the middle of summer. That means football season isn't far behind. We've just prepared our material for our annual print newsletter. It will be coming out in mid-August – so we hope you'll look for it. Sorry we haven't had our usual bi-monthly e-newsletters. I was away and then our e-newsletter distribution editor, Tennie Wiggins, was away. Sorry for our delay. 2. NEWS FROM SCSC MEMBERS AND FSU ALUMS · About 13 So Cal FSU alumni attended the annual Pic Pickin Picnic on June 1st. The picnic was held in San Diego. The event began with a golf tournament and included lots of other activities. About 200 people were in attendance with Virginia Tech having the most alumni attending. Authentic North Carolina pork was flown in specially for the event. Hush puppies were cooked on site. Sweet tea, watermelon, potato salad, cole slaw, chips, cookies, and soft drinks were also served. Leftovers were donated to the San Diego Rescue Mission. The day was cool, the food was hot, and a good time was had by all. Over $ 800 was raised via a silent auction for the VT Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund. · We want YOUR News Here! This summer, FSU chemist Andre Striegel will use his knowledge of cellulose, a key component of paper, to help the Library of Congress, world's largest library, find ways to preserve its vast treasure trove of books, manuscripts, maps, newspapers, and pamphlets – many irreplaceable (More information may be available at www.fsu.com.) Recent Study Calls FSU College of Music "Most Influential". Good news about the distinguished FSU College of Music hit a particularly high note this spring. When it comes to research published in the Journal of Research in Music Education (RME) – the premier publication for scholarly inquiry in the music education profession – a recent study calls FSU the single most influential institution since 1990. (More information may be available at www.fsu.com.) FSU Film School Thriller Wins Gold in Student Academy Awards. For the 4th time in 3 years, a Student Academy Award has gone to a film written and directed by a graduate student from FSU's College of Motion Picture, Television and Recording Arts – best known as The Film School. At the 34th Annual student Academy Awards ceremony on June 9th at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, first prize in the Narrative Category went to "Rundown", a dark thriller created by FSU Film School student Patrick Alexander, 29, of Cincinnati. "Rundown" – a short film that unfolds in just less than 15 minutes – tells the harrowing tale of a television news reporter who must cover the story of the hit-and-run crime she committed while driving to her debut as an anchorwoman. In addition to his gold medal, the emerging filmmaker – who will earn his MFA degree from FSU in August – will take home the priceless benefits of having his winning film screened in front of industry bigwigs during Saturday's gala ceremony. (More information may be available at www.fsu.com.) Fulbrights Awarded to a Record Nine FSU Students and Alumni. With help from FSU's Office of National Fellowships, 9 FSU students and alumni have received the prestigious Fulbright Award – the most in a single year for the university. This year's tally of Fulbright recipients tops FSU's 2006 record of 8 – and is a sign of the university's continuing commitment to help students pursue opportunities for educations and personal enrichment, according to Jamie Purcell, director of the Office of National Fellowships. The award winners are Natalie Binder, Dan Carlson, Jamal Grimes, Megan Hewitt, Katie Hodges, Anna Philp, Matt Phipps, Natasha Rocas, and Nathan Timpano. With their awards, they will study, conduct research and teach English overseas next year in 8 different countries across the glove. FSU students Thomas Henderson, Timothy Lorton and Douglas Westlake were selected as alternates. (More information may be available at www.fsu.com.) FSU Freezes Enrollment, Tightens Budget. FSU President T.K. Wetherell has announced that FSU will freeze enrollment and take aggressive steps to stabilize its budget in the face of declining state revenues, chronic under-funding of enrollment growth, the unknown consequences of tax reform and a vetoed tuition increase. Coming off an exciting championship season, the 2-time National Champion FSU men's track and field team headed to the nation's capitol on June 18th to meet President Bush in honor of the Seminoles back-to-back title-winning seasons. FSU College of Information Receives Cancer Research Grant The FSU College of Information has received a Bankhead-Coley Cancer Research Program grant from the Florida Department of Health to help health care providers support the breast cancer care needs of rural Floridians. Women's Volleyball 9/7/2007 – 9/8/2007 Tournament in Long Beach The FSU Women's Volleyball Team will be playing in a tournament at Long Beach State. Baseball 05/30/07 Tony Thomas, Jr. Named Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Year The postseason accolades continue to purr in for the FSU baseball team in 2007 . Tony Thomas, Jr. was recognized as a National Player of the Year while earning 1st-team All-American honors. Sr. Bryan Henry and sophomore Buster Posey were also honored for their efforts this season receiving first-team All-American accolades. 06/08/07 8 FSU Student Athletes Selected in MLB Draft Eight FSU student-athletes were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft. Tony Thomas, Jr. was the first Nole selected as he was drafted with the 97th overall pick in the 3rd round by the Chicago Cubs. See listing of those drafted later in this e-newsletter Swimming & Diving Preparation for US Nationals With the Beijing Summer Olympics approaching in less than a year and a half, the swimming world is about to take the next steps in preparing to continue its dominance. As it does every 4 years, swimming will take the grand stage for its 15 seconds of fame and, in the process, be the marquee sport during the one week it takes place. Coming off the most successful season in recent memory, members of FSU's swimming and diving team will set their sights on this summer and train the hardest they have in years in hopes of following in the footsteps of former FSU swimmer, Stephan Perry, a bronze medal winner 4 years ago. Women's Softball 05/30/07 FSU Wootson Caps Historic Career with 3rd NFC All American award Wootson became just the 2nd player in school history to earn a trio of NFCA All-American honors with her Third-Team selection . Track & Field 06/09/07 FSU Wins Back-to-Back National Title Ranked 1st coming into the final day of competition at the NCAA Championships, FSU's men cinched their back-to-back national team title after two stellar performances in the 200m and 400m. 06/24/07 Dix Earns Spot on US World Championship Team Walter Dix is the only athlete from FSU to earn a spot on the US World Championship team after finished 3rd in the 100 meters at the 2007 AT&T Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Women's Golf Women's Soccer 06/08/07 Paul Rogers hired as head soccer coach Rogers has been hired as an assistant coach and his primary responsibilities will include the training of the goalkeepers and team defending along with other recruiting and scouting duties. 06/17/07 Recruiting Class FSU Women's Soccer has inked Nationally Ranked Recruiting Class. The Noles were recently recognized by Soccer Buzz with the nation's second best recruiting class in 2007, while grabbing the top spot in the Southeast Region. The ranking is the highest garnered by the soccer team in the program's 13-year history. Men's Golf 06/11/07 Top 15 Final National Ranking The FSU men's golf team is ranked 15th in the final head-to-head standings of the 2007 season by GolfStat marking the best final national ranking for the Noles men's golf team since 1995, when they finished 7th in the nation. The Noles finished in a tie for 13th at the NCAA Championship, in 5th place at the NCAA East Regional, in a tie for 4th place in the ACC Championship. Women's Basketball 06/28/07 Three Noles on Academic All-ACC Women's Basketball Team Three student athletes were named to the All-ACC Academic Women's Basketball Team. Men's Basketball 06/28/07 Al Thornton Drafted by LA Clippers Al Thornton Was Selected No. 14 Overall by the LA Clippers in the 2007 NBA Draft. Student Athletes 06/10/07 Academic All-Americans FSU golfers, Jonas Blixt and Caroline Westrup, who both earned All-American honors for their success on the golf course, have earned ESPN's Academic All-District Second-Team honors for their success in the classroom.
